Cooke S4’s & S4/i’s
These lenses are easy for the assistants to work with. They have the same T stop of T2-22 across the range, good close focusing ability, the same 110mm front diameter*, many distance markings. They are color matched across the set and don’t exhibit Vintage characteristics rather they are compatible with contemporary Cooke cine lenses such as the 5i’s and S7’s.
Cooke S4 optics offer superb optical and mechanical performances. They exhibit good flare control, low distortion, no veiling glare and minimal spherical aberrations even at full aperture. The cam-type focus mechanism yields smooth and precise focus adjustments.
Academy and Emmy awards’ winning Cooke S4 Prime Lenses were developed in the 90’s in close technical collaboration with Clairmont Camera and Otto Nemenz International, both well established rental houses catering to professional camera crews in Hollywood at the time. These lenses are easy to maintain and service by lens technicians. The Cooke factory has made training accessible to many rental houses.
Cooke S4’s have been widely used on feature films since the late 1990’s, they are sought for their warm look, good contrast, minimal aberrations and pleasing skin tones.
The newer S4i’s have the ability to read (and store on modern cameras) all kinds of metadata such as the focus distance and aperture which eases VFX Post-Production work.
*The 12mm has a wider front diameter of 156mm, the 150 has a 125mm front and the 180mm a 136mm.
